Nelson Mandela Legacy Lecture
The lecture will critically engage with Mandela’s celebrated statement that “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. Without diminishing the importance of education, the lecture will argue that it is but one strand (albeit a crucial one) in the tapestry of economic, political, social and ecological policies and practices. Education itself is shaped by the economic and social structures of society and the agency of social forces that constitute racialised, classed and gendered lives. In this crucible, education can reproduce extant social relations and inequality or it can transform them.

Pre-conference workshop 1: Posthumanism and curriculum inquiry
Date: 25 October 2022
Time: 13h00 – 16h00
Venue: Auditorium 2, Two Oceans Aquarium, Cape Town, South Africa
Overview:
In this workshop the presenters will interactively engage attendees with theoretical and philosophical discourses that have shaped curriculum inquiry and that is still shaping it. Particular attention will be placed on posthumanism and what it means for curriculum inquiry in broad terms. We take our cue from Snaza, Appelbaum, Bayne, Carlson, Morris, Rotas, Sanlin, Wallin and Weaver (2014:52) who argue that “while we cannot offer any specific vision of what a new posthumanist curriculum studies will do, we are at the dead end of humanism, and now, together, we have to burrow in other directions”. As such, it raises questions as to what, where and how curriculum scholars might ‘burrow’ differently?

Pre-conference workshop 2: Starting to Write an Academic Article Journal
Date: 25 October 2022
Time: 13h00 – 16h00
Venue: Auditorium 1, Two Oceans Aquarium, Cape Town, South Africa
Overview:
The process of writing an academic article starts with knowing what contribution to want to add to the body of scholarship. In this workshop, we will start at the beginning: clarifying what your argument is and knowing who you wish to persuade. This means selecting appropriate journals for your paper in terms of choosing the right audience as well as thinking about your own career trajectory. You will work on writing your abstract first as a way to clarify your thinking and focus.
The workshop will be helpful to anyone new to the process of publishing journal articles. It will be particularly useful if you come with an idea for a paper that you can work on as there will be some time in the workshop for thinking and writing.
